The Australian Recreation Union (ARU) unites and empowers millions of Australians who cherish outdoor recreation. We are committed to protecting responsible access to hunting, fishing, 4WDing, shooting sports and other activities, ensuring these freedoms remain available and unchallenged for current and future generations.

What we protect

We protect the rights of over 8.2 million Australians to connect with nature through responsible outdoor recreation. This includes hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheel driving, archery, rock climbing and shooting sports – activities that build family memories, support mental health and foster respect for our wild places.

Why it’s under threat

Our way of life is under threat from mounting restrictive legislation and campaigns that seek to limit access to public lands and impose unnecessary regulations on law-abiding recreational users. Misunderstandings and targeted lobbying risk closing the doors on
traditions that have long been part of Australian life.

How we defend it

We defend these rights by engaging directly with parliamentarians, uniting the recreation community into a powerful collective voice, and advocating for sensible policies. As a dedicated union, we push back against harmful restrictions while promoting the positive role outdoor activities play in conservation and community wellbeing.
